Understanding Happiness: The Effect of the Past on the Present

True happiness is an amazing thing. Some of you may be asking, “Does it really exist?” The simple answer is, yes. The more challenging question is how do I obtain the mental state of happiness?

Let’s start with the concept of “A Christmas Carol” by Charles Dickens. I know this may seem like a strange place to start, but bear with me. Ebenezer Scrooge, the main character of the novel, is visited by three ghosts. The ghost of the present, the ghost of the past and the ghost of the future.  Each of these ghosts presents information that transforms Ebenezer’s world into one of happiness.

Another way of thinking about the story is the pain and pleasure of the past creates who we are today. The broken dreams, the betrayal, the disappointments, successes, and triumphs and, most importantly, what he took away from these experiences shaped his current mental state that he enjoyed, or in this case, did not.  The good news, of course, was that his fear of the future that would be created by his current behaviours motivated him to change his behaviours in the present.

But how do you change the behaviours of the present if the present behaviour is dictated by the memories and neural connections established in the past? The answer, of course, is that you need a time machine. With this time machine you would have the ability to change the past. Or more accurately, change your reaction to past events. By doing this, you are changing the neural connections in your mind that drive your current behaviour.

You might be thinking this all sounds great, but time travel hasn’t been developed yet. This is where you are very wrong. The subject of time travel is alive and well. It has been in existence for thousands of years. This is all possible the moment you realise what time is from a human perspective. Time is nothing but a neurological construct that people use to sort information. It gives us the ability to know the difference between today, yesterday and tomorrow.

The only issue is that memories of the past, for the majority of individuals, are encoded in their minds as an unquestionable fact that is linked to significant amounts of emotion. It is this emotion that prevents people from change.

The process of Time-Based Therapies or Techniques is the most useful way to rearrange our emotional perspective to the past. These practices are easy to apply and extremely effective. The only catch is that they need to be done by a well-trained person other than yourself.  By doing this, you can remove the emotional link to the past that dictated your current behaviour, freeing you to discover a new happier future. If you have experienced this phenomenon, please comment. In my experience it is truly amazing.

One of the main keys to happiness is a sense that the future will be better than today. Today, well lived leaves behind a trail of happiness. The future is nothing more than a projection of the emotions of the past into the future. As a result, today, live well. Happy, leaves behind a trail of happiness. This trail is the thing that we create our images of the future from. That is the main reason that as people get older, they frequently become grumpier. These people have left behind a trail of pain, disappointment and despair.

How do you live a happy life? Tidy up the past in order to live a better happier now, which guarantees a brighter future. One of the keys to true happiness is to be found in tidying up your past.
